Position Available:                    SHERIFF DEPUTY

Location:                                   Lea County Sheriff’s Department, Lovington, New Mexico

  Non-exempt, Sworn position, Full-time

2007 Hiring Range:                    $17.85/hour certified, $15.75/hour non-certified

                                                  Additional 5% over starting pay for 5 yrs. experience,

                                                  10% over starting pay for 10 yrs. experience                         

Work Hours:                              Rotating Shifts

General Statement of Duties: Patrols an assigned district within the County to preserve law and order; responds to dispatch calls; investigates complaints which may include crimes in progress, crimes reported after the fact, disturbances, accidents, etc.; conducts preliminary investigations at crime scenes, traffic accidents, disturbances, etc. to preserve and/or collect evidence; obtains statements as necessary for reporting circumstances and facts; makes arrests, takes suspects into custody, transports suspects to the jail and may restrain resisting individuals; will appear in county and district courts to offer testimony in criminal and non-criminal cases; prepares a variety of reports.

Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent required. Must successfully complete physical agility, written exams, oral and integrity interviews, as well as polygraph, physical and psychological exams, and extensive criminal and personal background investigation.

Certifications: NM-certified officers preferred. Applicants meeting all other qualifications will be considered.

·         Annual Leave - Employees accrue annual leave with pay in accordance with the following years of full-time service:

o    First thru fifth years:  3.75 hours per pay period

o    Sixth thru tenth years:  4.75 hours per pay period

o    Eleventh thru fifteenth years:  5.75 hours per pay period

o    Sixteenth and following years:  6.75 hours per pay period

·         Sick Leave -  Employees accrue sick leave with pay in accordance with the following years of full-time service:

o    Less than 10 years: 3.75 hours per pay period

o    10 years or more: 4.75 hours per pay period
